When Scott Hess joined Electronic Evolutions late last year, his professional reputation as an audio visual project manager spoke for itself. But shortly after joining the company, we were delighted to find he has a long history training police dogs as well as training canines for dock diving and other competitions. For Scott, it’s a great way to relax after a long day filled with technology.
Scott is the proud owner of Joker, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois and Rafe, a 10-year-old German Shepherd, as well as four-month-old Quinn’s Harley. Joker is active in canine dock diving as well as part of Schutzhund training, a sport that focuses on developing and evaluating those traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners. Schutzhund work concentrates on three parts: protection, tracking and obedience.
Scott became involved with dog training through the Carmel Police Department Explorers Program, for youngsters seeking a career in law enforcement. His “luck of the draw” was riding with one of Carmel’s canine officers who eventually allowed him to put on the “bite suit” and assist. Scott’s love for dog training has never waned for a minute, and he’s made many friendships along the way.
“When you have a sport/working dog, you spend hundreds upon hundreds of hours working together, teaching both the dog and a handler, on what to do, when to do it, and then how to do it. It is a bond that truly is special,” he said. “When it comes to fellow trainers, they become a … second family. We share our accomplishments, our defeats, and even a few tears. I have met trainers and handlers from all over the world, and our common language is ‘dog’.”
